#BlogHer11 #ftw

My mind needs to get around what I have seen, learnt, experienced, laughed at, drank, cried over and, basically pick any verb you want-ed at BlogHer 11 so I am just going to embed a slideshow for you.

I would like to say thank you to BlogHer for hosting such an amazing event. It was incredible and so much more than I thought it was going to be.

Also, huge thanks and massive hugs for everyone who made me feel like I was where I belonged.

You know who you are.

You rock.

More words will come soon.

the sky is the limit

What have I taken from BlogHer 11 so far?

That what I do here is really up to the both of us - me and you. I do this for me, but ultimately you read what I have to say.

I am the writer.

You the reader.

But you are more than that. Without you this would be a different place.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to sit and reflect and say thankyou.

Thankyou for reading and thank-you for inspiring me and for making me feel privileged to be read.

Now, where's that party?

out of the office

For the next few days I'm going to be in San Diego with the best of the best for BlogHer '11. I plan on meeting new people, learning new things and taking loads of photos of my shoes.

I think that this photo that I took minutes before posting this post, which I'm posting from my phone, as I wait for registration for open, sums up how I see my BlogHer experience - I'm going to suck in all the knowledge of others and become even more awesome.

Call me... Mecha-Pussy. Or Susan. Susan totally works.

wordless wednesday

slang

"Chook" - noun - chicken: the bird, cooked or alive.

Go ahead and use it in a sentence below.

Carn mate, give it a go.

i am white trash...

...aren't I?

I really enjoyed the motorbikes and the crowd and the smell of fuel at the very first EnduroX at X-Games 17. Does this make me white trash? I don't think so. I actually get offended at the assumption that people who like dirt bikes are trashy or poor. Maybe I get pissed because this is what I grew up with. Yes, I grew up with dirt bikes.

My brother, father, uncles and male cousins all rode motorbikes. I did a few times too but I was never really good at it so I gave up pretty quickly. My brother had a gift for the things. He could do things on bikes that others couldn't. He rode faster, jumped higher and crashed harder. He also earned the nickname "Bullet" for flying exceptionally fast over one of his bike's handlebars when he was a teenager. He has been Bullet ever since. The house I grew up in was covered in trophies from my dad and my brother, my uncles were nationally known in the sport, so yeah, you could say I know a bit about bikes.

My grandparents own an orchard in the Yarra Valley and MCRCV races at what our family has always called The Flat Track.  I grew up watching enduro, motocross and trials riding there. I was always watching, smelling and listening. The last time I was home I went up to see the race that was happening the day after I arrived in Melbourne in March  2010.

I guess when I was about 12 I grew out of watching them ride and I stopped going. I was bored watching the bikes and tired of waiting all day for them to finish. I much preferred to stay home or go to my friends house. Before I went to that MCRCV event last year I couldn't tell you the last time I saw anything bike related which is funny because it was such a huge part of my family's life growing up.

I hadn't really thought much about this part of my life until I went to the X-Games. A friend of mine asked me to go a couple hours before the event. You know me, it's all about the story so of course I said yes. All I knew was that we were going to Staples to see motorbikes.

We had scored last minute front row seats and as we sat down it all came rushing back when I saw the dirt, the jumps and smelled the petrol. When the bikes came out the sound immediately took me right back to The Flat Track where I had spent many, many weekends of my childhood. I thought of my dad, my brother, my uncles, my cousins and the mud and the motorbikes. A big goofy smile appeared on my face as I watched the riders.

EnduroX  is a hybrid of many of the motorbike events with six laps in the prelims and 10 laps in the finals. The track was tough and the girls were destroyed by it so we cheered extra hard for them but the guys crashed all over too. I remembered how injured the guys in my family would get and how much weight they would lose after actual enduros. They loved it. I am amazed at how they did it without being scared of hurting themselves. They had absolutely no fear. No fear...sounds like a good name for a company.

Thanks to Lady Ducayne and N8i for taking me on yet another adventure, and thanks to my family for starting the story in the first place. I'm looking forward to the next motocross event and next time I am even taking my kids. My family will be proud.

repeat

I wake.
I eat.
I drink.
I talk.
I write.
I smile.
I sleep.
I repeat.
I make it through each day but
Something tells me there's more.
I sigh.
I repeat.
And repeat.
Repeat.
