NaBloPoMo's theme of "fan" is what I'm talking about for most of June.
Today I am a fan of me.
Yep, I said it. Me.
After bitching and moaning and stressing out about the stupid things, I made some kick ass bricks and I'm really proud of the way they came out.
If you follow me on Twitter you've been reading my tweets and following what I've been up to over the past two days, if not feel free to search back.
I thought instead of writing about it I'd make a slideshow for you all to see how ace I am and I discovered I am much better at making decorated bricks than I am at making slideshows. The pics are repeated and all sorts of stuff but you'll get the general idea of what I was up to this entire weekend.
Today's post is keeping with the NaBloPoMo theme of "fan" and is very brief because it is pretty simple.
I'm a fan of people who get things done and here's a great example:
A little more than six months ago some local guys had an idea - make a shared workspace for freelancers in Santa Clarita. They thought about it, they talked about it, they researched it and then they went and actually made it happen.
Last night I attended the grand opening party for kreativ. It was full of amazing people who were as excited as me to see what kreativ had to offer.
These are the kind of people I am a fan of, people who dream and talk but then actually make things happen.
Way to go guys. Super proud of you and please keep making stuff happen.
(psst - there are more photos from the night on Facebook - have a look)
To me this is a really, really tough poll based on one of my all time favourite movies. I watched this, The Lost Boys, Pump Up The Volume and Heathers almost once a week when I was a teenager. Loved these movies.
Which character is my favourite? It's really hard to say. The one I always related to the most was Allison as I too was a basketcase and I thought she was amazing. She could draw, she was funny, a brilliant liar and had heaps of stuff in her bottomless purse. She was also gorgeous.
But....then there is Bender. My first love was Bender, well not really Bender himself but my high school boyfriend looked like him and was a bad boy like him. I have a warm fuzzy place in my heart for Bender.
So go ahead and choose, and I too will choose by the end of the day.
Which is the best character in The Breakfast Club:
The brain - Brian - Anthony Michael Hall The athlete - Andrew "Andy" - Emilio Estevez The basket case - Allison - Ally Sheedy The princess - Claire - Molly Ringwald The criminal - John "Bender" - Judd Nelson or The principal - "Dick" Vernon - Paul Gleeson The janitor - Carl - John Kapelos
As always vote in the box over there in the top right corner, and please leave comments below telling me a little about your choice. Come play on Twitter on Friday using the hashtag #fridaypoll and you can waste another productive Friday. You know you want to. Poll is now open, poll closes on 6/3/11 at 5PM PST.
"I stood over her sprawled out on the floor covered in cake. Her perfect makeup was perfectly messed up and her hair was covered in icing. I made the universal wrestling symbol for ‘the championship belt is mine’, which seemed strangely appropriate but of course she, being highly refined, didn’t get it. She started stammering something but I cut her off and leant down low, pointed in her face and whispered, “Why won’t you just shut up?”
Tell us about your favourite band/musicican
As my bio says that music is my drug of choice. I don't have a favourite band or musician, I am just a huge fan of music, period. I do need to say that I am really fussy with what I listen to. You might even call me a music snob. I just think I have awesome taste and an ear for what is good but hey, it's what I like so of course I am biased. Also, I may have been the ' I listened to this before they went mainstream so now I hate' them kind of person. Big time. Call me a pre-hipster, hipster. Now I don't care as much, I just like what I like.
Music to me is like air - I feel like I need it to live. It inspires me. It can turn my day around. I am also notorious for losing hours and hours exploring albums, artists and playlists. As a writer I can't write without it. I listen to different things depending on the day and what I am writing. If I am working on something melancholy all I have to do is throw something by the Red Sparrowes or Explosions in the Sky on and I'm there. I wrote an entire short story just by listening to Buildings Began To Stretch looped one cloudy morning. I sat and I listened and wrote what I saw. Yes, what I saw. It's not like I see colours and shapes, I see scenes, people, feelings, temperatures but only with this kind of non-lyrical music.
When I was listening to that song, I wrote this. It's completely unedited and just the way it came out:
"The field was green and the grass swayed softly in the breeze. It was like the fire had never happened. Everything was fresh. The water from the sky had brought new life, a new start, a new land for them to live on and have as their home. The bell struck off in the distance and the sound of crickets chirping in the night air was loud but soothing. They stood together and held to each other tightly as they looked over their land. All was quiet. No one was coming to hurt them tonight. No swords, no horses ; it was over. The war was over. The fear remained and like hurt children they had hid and waited for it to be over. There was being brave, and there was being smart. They had chosen to hide and live. It was the right decision to make as there was no way that the two of them had any chance of ever beating the men who had come. As strong as he was and as protective as he was, there was no point. He would have been killed. He was zero use to her dead. She needed him alive and helping her with everything. She was strong but couldnt do everything on her own. Standing out there together, breathing, looking, seeing what remained and listening to how beautiful the world was when it was left alone was something else. Not too long ago swords had clashed against each other and blood had been drawn and flown. Salty yet sweet, splashed up against the walls of the house. There was a trail leading away from their front door. It was the trail that he had left behind".
That's what I saw when I listened to that song. It's not right or wrong, it just is.
To me, music doesn't just hover around, it sinks under my skin and things happen. I can feel it. It's hard to explain, but music really is my drug of choice for this reason. If I am down, I listen to something to pick me up, if I need to focus or be inspired something else. If I need to get somber and serious and emotional I can do that in an instant by listening to the right song.
Not everything is like the song above, my taste is really eclectic and I'll give anything a try. I'll usually know within a few seconds if I like it or not. If it's not affecting me, I'm not interested and to me it's just throw away. I can't understand how it's not like this for everyone and when I tell people some just can't understand how important music is to me.
So music, thank you for everything, from your biggest fan.
Are you a fan of a sports team? When did you become a fan?
I'm sure if you read this blog enough you will know that my two main teams are the LA Kings and the LA Dodgers, but did you know that I am an AFL fan too? Probably guessed that seeing I am Aussie and all. Let me tell you a little bit about the team I follow and I'm going to throw in as much slang as I can to keep you on your toes.
My team - Richmond Tigers (AFL)
Before you are even born your family has chosen the footy team you will follow and in my case I scored The Richmond Tigers.
Oh hey Matty...
From ABC Grandstand
Sorry, distracted...
CARN THE TIGES!
The Aussies reading this now think of me as a bogan for admitting I am a Richmond supporter.I am not a derro. I didn't go to the Royal - I just waited outside for the boys to get out. I liked to watch Richo take a specky as much as the next girl...or guy. I liked the tiger mascot. I liked the yellow and black. I still have a scarf and a Richo jersey here somewhere in my shed. What I don't like is that we haven't won a grand final since 1981. That's a long time. I could go into the whole shebang of the rules and the maggots and the barracking and balls and marks and handballs and quarters and tight tight tight shorts but hey, i'll leave that research up to you. If I had to describe it to someone who had never seen it, I'd say it's like all the ball sports rolled into one. The ball is kicked, handpassed, bounced but never thrown. Also the men tackle and tackle hard - without padding. Take that NFL. There are no offence and defense and special teams - there is just a team and they run. They run heaps.
AFL is an ace sport, kicks rugby's arse, kicks NFL's arse, kicks soccer's arse.
