Matt published a gorgeous piece on Hologram Thoughts yesterday called Tree, Mountain,Valley and Cloud that I instantly fell in love with. I asked him for a challenge so he asked me to write a sister piece to his work, giving me the instructions: " Give me a short story about the waves loving shore and shore missing waves, every time they ebb out." OK, I thought. I can definitely do that. Here is the sister piece that we titled Shore, Wave and Moon. Enjoy.
Shore, Wave and Moon.
He had to leave and it pained him to do so. He would be back before too long, but the time apart would feel like an eternity to both of them. They hated the separation. They were meant to be together.
Shore, Wave and Moon.
He had to leave and it pained him to do so. He would be back before too long, but the time apart would feel like an eternity to both of them. They hated the separation. They were meant to be together.
Shore prepared for the inevitable. She wondered if Wave hated leaving her as much as she hated being left behind. She wanted to be with him until the last second, but he was scared of each goodbye. She could feel him starting to pull away in preparation like he always did.
Wave held her until he felt the time was close and then, as his fear took over, he released his grip. Wave was scared because he loved Shore more than words could express. The love was natural, it was true, and he hated to hurt her and he hated to leave.
Wave tearfully whispered to Shore that everything was going to be alright. He held her in an embrace that only those who have held their truest of loves have felt. He did not want to let her go but it was out of his control. He looked at Moon. He had to go.
Wave let go and left.
Shore cried silently.
Wave took a piece of Shore with him. He wanted to remember her and keep her close to his heart. He wanted to have her with him until they were together again. Shore didn’t mind. Shore would give him everything she could, everything she had. With each touch, a part of Shore was removed. She became more open, more fragile and deeper in love. She would sacrifice herself for him.
Shore waited.
Shore waited for Wave as she always did. Shore was patient, she was strong. Shore loved Wave like Wave loved Shore. No matter how long he was gone she would always be there to hold him when he came back. She waited. Shore waited for Wave’s return.
Wave missed Shore.
Wave felt empty without Shore. He couldn’t feel her touch but he could feel her spirit. The two of them were pieces of the same creation, and Wave could innately feel Shore’s pain. He knew Shore was crying and hurting her upset him. Wave loved Shore as much as Shore loved Wave. He wanted to be with her, holding her endlessly, but from time to time he had to leave. Wave had no choice.
Shore waited.
Shore longed for Wave’s return and she looked at Moon and asked with tears flowing,
“Why do you keep taking Wave from me?”
Moon was silent.
Shore waited.
Wave missed Shore.
Wave was tired of hurting Shore, wanted to be with her and he looked at Moon angrily and screamed,
“Why do you keep taking me away from Shore?”
Moon was silent.
Wave fumed.
All his anger and sadness and love for Shore started to swell. He refused to stay away from her any longer. Pushing forward with everything he could Wave headed for Shore. Forceful, full of longing he made his way to his love.
Moon watched.
Shore spotted Wave heading towards her. Her heart lifted and she forgot of all the pain, the sadness, and the longing. Everything was forgotten as Shore saw her love. All was forgiven. Shore steadied herself for Wave’s powerful embrace.
Wave returned to Shore.
All the time spent apart melted away as Wave held Shore with everything he had. He whispered “I’m sorry. I love you” over and over. Wave was back so Shore was happy. She had waited and he was holding her once more. They embraced with everything they had.
Moon watched.
Wave truly loved Shore and Shore loved Wave completely. Wave told Shore he would never leave her but Shore was already preparing herself for the inevitable.
Moon sighed.
Moon sighed.
Shore felt Wave begin to pull away.

This is achingly beautiful. Every person who has felt love so deep that your soul will never be without that special person will recognize their self within your words.
You took a small challenge and made it a huge victory.
I just write down what comes out of my head. I sort of love this story too. Thanks for the challenge. You seem to bring out the good stuff. More challenges please.
I just re-read this, and I love it more. How about a short story about two stars, watching each other over the millennia, forever in love, never able to touch?
I love it more each time I read it too. I love the stars idea. I'm on it. I can do the tragic love stories, you can do the happy ones.
