alabaster skeleton

A few months ago I linked out to a song that Jason McKay had told me about. It was called Miss You So Much by  Alabaster Skeleton. It was raw, passionate, heartbreaking and I loved it. I later found out is also written and performed by one of my friends, Nick Zigler.

Hey Nick ol' buddy ol' pal, I kinda dig your musical stylings.

From October till January we shared links to Nick's songs via Twitter and he managed to create a nice little devoted following complete with #swoons and threats of undies being thrown. Enough was enough and the people demanded to see if the kid could actually sing. Nate took things into his own hands and we got this email with an invitation to go to a gig dubbed: "Not quite hip enough for the hipsters". Sure, I was in. When do I ever say no? I was slightly concerned though. Would I ever be able to look at Nick the same way again?

On February 12th, the Coffee House in Newhall hosted the first official gig for Alabaster Skeleton. Nick, who is Alabaster Skeleton was helped out by the very talented Jason McKay. It was very basic:    a coffee shop, the two of them, some lighting from M Factor Lighting to set the mood and  green wristbands if you answered yes to the secret question,

"Are you an Alabaster Skeleton fan?"
"Um, I think so. That's what I'm here to find out"

I hoped the answer would stay yes.
We bought coffee, found seats and listened.
And yes, the kid did good.

Alabaster Skeleton's set went very smoothly due to a couple things: everyone in the coffee shop knew each other so there was no odd audience vibe, and they just performed really well. Nick told me he was nervous but he and Jason came across as pros. Lit from above in purples and blues the duo played acoustically as Nick sang about relationships, and signs, and the land down under - which he apparently wrote. Greatest version ever by the way and yes, I was blushing. The gig was great and, to be brutally honest, more than what I'd expected. There's a real difference and sometimes a complete disconnect between what you hear that's recorded and what you get from a live performance. Alabaster Skeleton's music is excruciatingly personal with the recurring themes of love, want and heartbreak so I was wondering how that was going to translate into performing in front of a group. Obviously it wasn't a problem as all the songs went over really well, with I'm Gonna Miss You So Much being one of many highlights. As always I was amazed by how talented these guys were and I look forward to seeing them perform again.

I have to say, I'm very lucky to be surrounded with some very talented people from many different fields.

And FYI - my favourite Alabaster Skeleton song is Unnamed Lover, Knows Who She Is. I dig it.

Very frickin cool. I'm so flattered. I'm honored to be a part of alabaster skeleton.

Glad you liked it. You both did really well and always very proud of you. Way to go, Idaho, no wait, way to go Wisconsin. Nah. That sounds shit. :)
